I’ve officially started therapy. That’s not easy to admit, which is why I want to continue working to de-stigmatize mental health care. Treating our minds is just as important as treating our bodies, so if you or a loved one is in need of resources for mental health care, please visit the National Alliance On Mental Illness: www.nami.org/About-Mental-Illness/Treatments
To that end, I decided to explain what are known as the 10 Cognitive Distortions. These are lenses in which we view and analyze the world that commonly lead to inaccurate, toxic, and dangerous thoughts. Jumping to conclusions, over-generalization, discounting the positive… all examples of distortions that twist the reality of what you’re receiving. These occur with major life events like break ups/heartbreak/divorce or losing a job, as well as everyday occurrences like traffic or getting snubbed on the street. Knowledge is power, and with an understanding of these 10 things, hopefully you’ll be prepared to fend off the distortions when they inevitably present themselves.
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

Haha "I should have gone to bed earlier" me at midnight when I have to get up at 5 am. Followed closely by "Oh well, my own fault, lets get 5 hours of sleep and Ill try again tomorrow". "Should have" statements should also be validated long enough to admit to the mistake and then move on. "I should have worded it like this instead.. but oh well, next time!"

I'm so grateful that I found your channel. You have helped me be more honest with not only my doctor but myself regarding my mental health. I was diagnosed with clinical depression when I was 17, I tried therapy at that time but it didn't work out. I am now 34 and I have started therapy again. I have been way more honest with this therapist that when I was 17 and have realized that not only do I have clinical depression but pretty bad anxiety and ADD. Without these this channel I don't know if I would have been able to admit what has been going on in my head since I was a kid, that I thought was normal. Thank you for doing what you do and thank you for creating this channel to help people beyond your own patients.

I do the last one. I've published 3 (almost 4) books but all I can focus on is how my personal life is sucky, rather than focusing on the fact that I've acomplished something great. It's hard to change years of ingrained negativity.

On a different note, I would like to know who in their right mind decided to ghost, cheat on and break up with you!? I get that we all may need therapy from time to time as it helps us deal with issues we might not be able to deal with without the necessary tools - given by the therapist, but I honestly think the people who ghosted, cheated on and broke up with you are in dire need of therapy or in desperate need of a neurologist cause something ain't working right up there! 🤣🤣

I love this video. Just realized I do a lot of the things on the list. I am very self-critical and sometimes it's not a bad thing because it motivates me to do better, however when I don't achieve my - sometimes unrealistic - goals I get very demotivated and struggle to get past it. I felt like the Labeling, Mental Filters, should statement, and discounting the positive is basically what I do on a day-to-day basis. I work full time and am studying towards my degree part-time. I am an over performer (or being labeled one by the people closest to me) and usually get exceptionally good grades. For example, my current average score between all my classes that I have taken is 91%, so when I don't get at least 90% on a test, I become demotivated and start criticizing myself, and say things like: "I should've studied harder." "I should've stayed up later and gotten more work in." etc. and I overlook the good grades I have already achieved as well as the fact that my grade is actually still a distinction (usually) which is not bad at all. I really enjoyed and appreciated this video, definitely did not think I would be doing so many things on the list.

I have an anxiety related condition that doctors at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago call "Psychogenic Non-seizure Neurological Events". I have moments where I lose my train of thought and become momentarily aphasic (usually about 5-10 seconds). The weird thing is, I'm totally aware of what's going on during the "event". After a long process of testing and observation to rule out actual Epilepsy, the therapists at Rush have been amazing at showing me that my need to control EVERYTHING around me puts me into short periods of dissociation that manifest themselves in this way. I was raised in an extremely religious and judgmental environment. I was scrutinized continuously. Add being gay to that and you have a recipe for a difficult growing up. Don't get me wrong, I've never felt unloved or unwanted and my relationship with my family is as healthy as it can be. The therapists have worked with me to develop a set of coping mechanisms that help some, as medications haven't proven helpful in my situation. I totally understand the concept of the toxic thought. With hard work, and openness with one's therapist; progress is possible.

Nr 10 might stem from our negative feelings towards pride. It is considered one of the 7 deadly sins and therefore might have a very large cultural stigma attached to it. In my opinion, pride is not something to avoid, unless it is misplaced. It can give you that positive feeling that you might otherwise lack, the feeling that drives you to continue doing what you do to the best of your ability. You do have to be careful though that you don't ignore constructive criticism about what you are proud of, since this pride might make you biased towards the positives of what you achieved, neglecting to look at the negatives. Also, those achievements do not give you the right to act as if you are worth more than others that in your eyes didn't achieve as much as you did, since these achievements don't necessarily make you a better person and it leads to discredit of another's achievements. Pride should be about your own achievements, not about how they relate to another's. So you can definitely go wrong with pride. It can be misplaced, it can get to your head and it can lead to certain negative ways of thinking that you need to be aware of. But pride in and of itself is actually a motivator and you shouldn't discount what you achieved and shouldn't only look at all the negative things that happened or that you caused.

So, I play around with my daughter a lot because she always has sarcasm. Wonder where she got it from? Anyway she is sometimes so much for people that some of her "friends" say they don't want to hang out with her. I asked her "Haley, you know that some people may not like you one day right? This is okay because that's what happens. " Her answer was, "well, I like me." I only wish I can have the confidence this girl has. She loves herself so much and I only hope to learn to love myself as much as she does.

I've often wondered if Magnification or something similar is behind all the anti-vaxxers, flat-earthers, and other conspiracy theories. Our ancestors, looking at a field of tall grass with no visible danger, were probably conditioned to assume that there was some danger there, such as a camouflaged predator. Being hyper-ready to react helped them to survive. Today we rarely face danger like that, but I wonder if some people's brains are still hard-wired to constantly expect and look for "danger". Perhaps in the modern world that "danger" presents itself as paranoia about the "Deep State" trying to control the government and take away their rights (guns), or vaccines containing microchips and causing autism, or scientists and the government hiding the truth about the moon landings, aliens, etc...

You know the Ben Shapiro quote, "Facts don't care about your feelings?" My anxiety be like, "Feelings don't care about your facts." It takes a ton of effort to pick apart those moments and overcome them. I'm not always successful. Don't be afraid of utilizing resources and tools like therapy, or mindfulness, meditation, etc. It's worth it.

After watching this vid i've realized how mentally stable i am, just because of my "it is what it is" attitude. I'ts obviously not like i don't do my best (trust me, if i want to accomplish something, i'll step out of my comfort zone and do what needs to be done), i'ts just that if i didn't succeed at something, what can i possibly do? usually nothing (unless i can, then i obviously try again and see what comes of it until there's nothing more i can do). so why worry? and what are all the "what if"s for? same answer - nothing. they don't do you no good. i guess the only "bad" thing is my arachnofobia, which is the fear of spiders, but you know what? it is what it is, if there's a spider in the corner of my room, i'll just let it live there until it comes closer and i'm not comfortable with its presence anymore, and kill it (or call my dad, i still have about 4 months living with my hero, might as well ask for help). so yeah, good for you, start therapy if you feel the need, or just talk to someone, just please, be careful, the internet is NOT a safe place, you might rather want to talk to someone you know and/or can count on. Dr Mike, i wish you all the best, love you and your content, stay safe, happy and healthy! don't worry, its not easy to admit to going to therapy, but at the end of the day- your fans may want to try it if they feel the need just because you did. Also, you spread awareness. Because who would've thought? u seem so happy and energetic in your videos! yeah, it usually isn't really visible, the problem i mean. so don't fret, at the end of the day- its a win win situation for both you and the people you admit it to- your subscribers. ik there's also haters, but what do they know? if they hate, they unfortunately may need some psychological help themselves. so once again, stay safe, smile wide and follow your dreams people!! )yes, im aware probably nobody is gonna read that, buuuuut.... it is what it is, i said what i wanted to speak up about ((: ).

I am in awe with someone like Doctor Mike admitting to starting therapy. Mental health and emotional struggles are so stigmatized that even if you are falling apart, you are compelled to put on a brave face and feel like a million bucks - and the more successful you are, the more you feel pressured to look the part. As fantastic as the other videos are, this is by far my absolute favorite. I really hope to see more content addressing this issue. Thank you for your openness. Well done, doc!
